Show Notes

Our team had the great privilege of spending time with the students from The Haven Academy, a local school for students with disabilities. PGT was included in their Manufacturing Summer Camp, and they spent two weeks with us! They learned so much about windows, doors, manufacturing, as well as job skills. There are two episodes rolled into one - we hope you enjoy hearing from these incredible students and their instructors.

[00:00:09] Speaker A: Welcome to the Clear Impact podcast brought to you by PGTI University. Thanks for joining us today. My name is Sherri Connor, and I am your host. So good morning. We are here on the Clear Impact podcast, and we have some very special guests with us today. We have some students from the Haven Academy, and you guys have been here with us for the last two weeks doing a summer camp. So, first, because there's four of you and only four microphones, I'm going to just let you guys introduce yourselves. So I want to know your name and maybe how old you are. And then after everyone does that, then we'll come back with another question. Okay? So we'll start right here with Dylan. [00:00:57] Speaker B: Hi, my name is Don Kalvin. I am 22 years old, and I've been living in Sarasota for only, like, a year now. So this is actually gonna be my second year coming up, living at the haven. So this is gonna be very exciting for me. This is actually my first time doing an audio podcast with a professional from PGT. [00:01:20] Speaker C: Hello, my name is Mark. I am 19 years old, and I was from Clifton, New Jersey. [00:01:29] Speaker D: My name is Kayla, I'm 19, I'm from Texas. I've been in Florida since 2016. [00:01:38] Speaker E: And my name is Dean, and I'm 18 years old, and I've been living in Florida for all my life. [00:01:46] Speaker A: So I want to know what has been something really interesting that you've gotten to do since you've been with PGT the last couple of weeks. Like, what is the most interesting thing? And don't just give me, like, you can say the cannon shot or you can say something else, but you have to say why it was interesting. Like, I want to hear more about what made it interesting for you. Okay. [00:02:14] Speaker B: My favorite thing about PGT was taking a tour of the ilabe, and I thought seeing the can shop for, like, in person is, like, an amazing experience. Like, no other clients or other customers get to have a chance to see that in person. So we're very lucky we got to see that in person. [00:02:38] Speaker C: My favorite thing about PGT is I like the canon shots because I like to test the glow. I like to test all the windows to see if it breaks or not. [00:02:50] Speaker D: My favorite part about PGT was the cannon shot because I got to see and test the windows to see how tough they are. [00:02:58] Speaker E: And my favorite part is also a cannon shot because it's pretty cool to see a live, like, kind of like a live event where you get to shoot, like, apply wood up against the window and see if it breaks or not? [00:03:18] Speaker F: Oh, we've done everything from make windows, make screens, gone onto the floor factory. We've talked to employees. This is what you call a truly hands on experience. PGT has let us become involved with every facet of making windows. The machinery, talking with people who run the machines, seeing videos. We've heard about the company from start to finish. We feel like we're part of the PGT team, and that's what we hope to do in the future, is get some of our students here. For my students, the overall experience has been great. They've seen different aspects of how windows are made, the steps it takes to make the windows. More importantly, they were exposed to different aspects of PGT. We've seen every building, talked to different workers, supervisors and my students found out real quick that they can work here, they can be productive, and they can advance throughout the company. We talked to many workers who were entry level, and they've been here for many years and are currently holding higher positions, which gives my students hope, overall, great experience. PGT is awesome with our kids. Check them out. [00:04:34] Speaker A: What is something that you didn't know about windows or doors before your time here? [00:04:42] Speaker F: I did not know that. I'm from Ohio, and in Ohio, we just have. We just have traditional windows. We don't have safety windows. But now that I've been exposed to BGT, I realize the importance of their windows and why they're in such high demand. [00:05:01] Speaker B: The amazing thing about these products are it keeps your. It keeps your house nice and I safe. [00:05:09] Speaker C: What I learn is they make good process of the windows, of how it's made. They use all the robot machines. [00:05:17] Speaker D: And all I learned the process of windows is they make. They put it together and it makes it tough to. After the hurricane hits, the windows don't break and the quantity with quantity, because the customers will be happy and they want to come back to the store and find out the windows broke. [00:05:38] Speaker E: Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree. They made such good quality windows. And I recommend and prefer everyone to choose the windows from this window company. Again, it's really amazing experience. It did a lot of things, and overall, their quad products are getting better and better every year. [00:06:13] Speaker A: So did you know, like, do you have any idea, like, how many we do? Like, was that a surprise to anyone? Like, the volume of windows that we manufacture? Was that a surprise? [00:06:27] Speaker D: Yes, it was. [00:06:28] Speaker B: Same here. [00:06:30] Speaker C: Yeah, I'm gonna have to agree also. [00:06:32] Speaker A: Yeah, I know we did a tour with you guys last week. I got to lead you on a mezzanine tour and we showed you the finished goods warehouse and I made you guys guess, like, how many days it took to produce the 9000 units that were in our space. Does anybody remember the number? [00:06:52] Speaker B: Three. [00:06:53] Speaker C: Three. [00:06:55] Speaker A: So you guys have done in your first podcast. This is amazing. Thank you for spending time with us today. [00:07:01] Speaker C: You're welcome. [00:07:02] Speaker D: Welcome. [00:07:03] Speaker E: Thank you. [00:07:04] Speaker D: Thank you for your time. [00:07:05] Speaker B: Thank you so much for your time. [00:07:07] Speaker C: Thank you for letting us do the podcast. [00:07:09] Speaker A: Yeah, of course. [00:07:10] Speaker D: This is my first time doing a podcast. [00:07:12] Speaker A: Yeah, well, everybody starts somewhere, right? [00:07:15] Speaker D: Yeah. [00:07:15] Speaker A: Maybe you'll go on to become a podcaster one day. One day. [00:07:20] Speaker B: That might be a good future job for me to start a podcast with a special guest, right? [00:07:27] Speaker A: Exactly. It's always fun when you get to interview people. All right, well, thank you so much for joining us. Have a great day. We are sharing our expertise around all topics relating to the window and door industry. So good morning. We are back on the Clear Impact podcast, and we have some very special guests with us today. We have more students from the haven who have been with us for the last two weeks doing a morning summer camp. And so we've already interviewed four students this morning and now we have four more. So it just turns out perfectly. We have eight students. One student, John, was not so excited about recording, and so he's here with us, but he's watching. So we have our instructor, dawn, who is on the fourth microphone. So we're just going to go around the table, and I would like for you to introduce yourselves, tell us your name and how old you are and maybe how long you've been with the haven. My name is Sophia. [00:08:45] Speaker G: How old are you, Sophia? [00:08:47] Speaker A: 19 years old. [00:08:49] Speaker G: You've been at the haven for about three years. My name is Don Herndon. I'm the director of mission services at the Haven. I was fortunate enough to be asked to help with this summer's inclusion manufacturing camp. And so I'm here with these great students enjoying all the learning and the. The exploring and discovery that we're getting to do here at PGT. [00:09:19] Speaker H: My name is blaze Bennett. I am 19 years old and I've been at the haven four years. Hi, I'm Michael. I'm Martin. I've been at the haven about three years now. [00:09:33] Speaker A: What I would like to know is what is something really cool and interesting? Like, what was your favorite thing about being here at PGT? The last week and a half. My name is Sophia. What's your favorite thing, what was your. [00:09:50] Speaker G: Favorite thing that we did here at PGT, Sophia? Um, cheese window did when we made the screens. [00:09:59] Speaker A: The screen. [00:10:00] Speaker G: You liked that? Yeah, yeah. That was really fun, wasn't it? [00:10:04] Speaker A: Yeah, I like him. [00:10:05] Speaker G: Yeah. So my favorite part, I think, has been just seeing all of the people working together as a team. When we took our tour of the mezzanine and got to look down on all the production that was in that plant, it was just really amazing to see how you could have so many people in a large space. I think it was a quarter mile long or something, and all sort of working together, and that was really impressive. The cannon shot into the window was also a lot of fun. [00:10:43] Speaker H: I like the way that they build with the windows and how they shipped their products to different states. [00:10:54] Speaker G: Yeah. Blaze, you are interested in sort of the business end of everything, right? Like, how many states are they in and the different countries that they sell to? Yes, yes. Yeah. That was really fun learning about that. [00:11:06] Speaker H: Right, right. Unlike all the machinery they had. [00:11:11] Speaker A: What is something that you didn't know about windows before you started coming here that you now know? So what did you learn about windows? Anything or glass. [00:11:25] Speaker G: What did we learn about windows, Sophia? [00:11:29] Speaker A: Geeze. [00:11:30] Speaker G: Cheese. Oh, because. So they referred to the windows. They referred to the windows as like a grilled cheese sandwich, right? Yeah, absolutely. So that's what you remember. Great. And that's the concept that keeps them hurricane resistant. Right. That whole concept of putting something between two panes of glass. Right, right. So what did, what have you found out about windows that you didn't know before you came here? [00:11:58] Speaker H: The thing I did not know, I didn't know they shipped to different countries and to different continents. [00:12:09] Speaker G: Yeah. Blaze. Because I think some of that goes back to Mister John's instruction on stocks and looking at how businesses grow and where they sell their products and stuff. Right. You were very interested in that. [00:12:22] Speaker H: Yes. [00:12:23] Speaker G: Cool. Mike, what about you? [00:12:26] Speaker H: I learned that before that there's different types of windows. [00:12:31] Speaker G: About the different types. Right. Did we learn today that they can help do what? What can windows do to help us save money? Didn't we talk in the. Where we just were with Patrick about coating the window and how it can help keep the heat in or keep the heat out? [00:12:51] Speaker H: Heat out, yeah, keep the heat out. [00:12:53] Speaker G: So windows can save us a lot of money. Right. If we install them properly and if we use the right kind of window, we can save money on our electric bills. [00:13:02] Speaker A: So one of the other cool things about our windows, and I bet you guys learned about this too, is that you don't have to put hurricane shutters on your windows. So if you think about being in Florida, right, and all the storms come through here, and if there's a hurricane coming, you have to put shutters on your windows to stay safe and to keep your house from getting ruined. Right. And so if you're on vacation somewhere and a storm is coming, then you have to leave your vacation to come home to put your shutters on. And then if you have parents that are here and maybe they're older and they can't do it, then you have to help them. And then maybe you have to help your neighbors. And it's just a lot of work and you don't have to do any of that if you have impact windows, right? [00:13:52] Speaker G: Does that make sense, everybody? [00:13:54] Speaker H: Yes, yes. That makes sense. [00:13:56] Speaker G: Yes. [00:13:57] Speaker H: Lot of sense. A lot of sense. [00:13:59] Speaker G: So does anybody put hurricane shutters on their house at home? When a hurricane's coming, is that something that you all do at home? [00:14:08] Speaker H: My parents and I don't. [00:14:10] Speaker G: You don't? Probably because you have impact resistant windows. [00:14:14] Speaker H: Yes. [00:14:15] Speaker G: I mean, we have those on my home, and so I'm comfortable without necessarily covering up the windows. So that's a nice thing, right? [00:14:23] Speaker H: Yes. My time here that I had fun with the types of windows that they. [00:14:33] Speaker G: Made everybody else, too. Are we happy about the education that we received down here? We're glad that we know more about windows. We're glad that we know that there are other jobs that are available in our county. [00:14:49] Speaker H: Yes, yes. [00:14:51] Speaker G: Yeah. Okay. Well, great. [00:14:53] Speaker A: Well, thank you so much for taking some time with us today, and it was a pleasure taking you on a tour last week and glad that we had some time this morning to do a podcast with you, and we look forward to seeing you maybe next summer. Okay. [00:15:08] Speaker G: Thank you very much. [00:15:10] Speaker H: Thank you. Thank you. [00:15:12] Speaker A: Thank you. The Clear Impact podcast is brought to you by PGTI University.
